Who We Are

The Franczak Institute for Philosophy, Politics and Economics is an interdisciplinary community of scholars and students that promotes research, provides educational opportunities, and builds linkages between the three academic fields mentioned in its name.
In their research, members of the Franczak Institute draw inspiration from the works of Adam Smith and the ideals of the Enlightenment in general.
The Franczak Institute also provides governmental and corporate clients with professional services like policy analysis, legislative drafting and management consulting.

Our mission

The Franczak Institute’s mission is to better political and economic institutions and public policies with the use of moral, political and economic theory.

Our Values

I.

Humanism

We put human interest and human values at the center of our activity.

II.

Impartiality

We are not permanently associated with any political party, interest group or economic doctrine.

III.

Constructive criticism

We strive for excellence in private and academic life, and this is what we expect in the public domain as well.

Our Founders

The Franczak Institute was founded in 2007 by two alumni of the Jagiellonian University’s Law School interested in interdisciplinary research on economic institutions such as business organizations, contracts or money.

Those alumni were Lukas Franczak and Katarzyna Franczak.

It had a place in Kraków, the medieval capital of Poland and second oldest (after Prague) academic city in Central Europe. Since then, the activity of the Franczak Institute has significantly expanded, but Lukas and Kasia continue to chart its development.

Research

The Center for International Political Economy

The Franczak Institute’s research activity is based around interdisciplinary research centers. The aim of the oldest one of these, the Center for International Political Economy established in 2017, is to deepen the understanding of international, national and local interactions between political and economic forces. A distinctive feature of the Center is the commitment of its collaborators to the classical tradition in political economy. Following Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations they, for example, make use of historical and comparative data to discover patterns of global development.

Rectangle 259
The future of a humankind is in the stars, and nowadays we are witnessing a huge acceleration in space exploration. On the front line of this historical process are, of course, astronomers and engineers but there is also work to be done by policy designers and legislators. As the space economy goes hand in hand with space exploration, the development of the economy’s regulations is becoming an important issue in many countries around the world. The Center for Space Law and Policy is the place where national policies are compared and law concerning space exploration and the economy is analyzed.

The Center for Philosophy of Economics is the youngest of the Institute’s research centers. At the moment it is the base for two interdisciplinary research projects. The first one is about happiness and well-being policy. Should a state promote the happiness and well-being of its citizens? How can government do this? What is the nature of happiness and well-being and the difference between them? These are the main problems under consideration. The aim of the second, complementary project is to elucidate the nature of practical wisdom (phronesis) and its role in policy design and implementation.

Policy Analysis

Conducting research is a one way to carry out the Franczak Institute’s mission, another way is by providing clients with professional services.
As policy analysts, we help to define problems earmarked for government action as well as to prescribe the measures suitable to solve that problem via policy action or change.
In particular, we gather information about the problem situation and its context, design and compare policy tools, and assess policy alternatives. The outcome of our work is usually a statement of policy advice, i.e. a recommendation or opinion for future courses of government action or inaction.

I.

Legislative Drafting

Sometimes policy implementation requires change in an existing law.

We supply clients with professional assistance during the entire legislative process.

For example, after receiving drafting instructions, we may prepare a legislative plan, compose and develop a legislative text, or verify/consult a draft prepared by other legislators. Our expertise in law is especially useful during the preparation of a legislative plan, which includes an analysis of the existing law, the necessity of legislation, a recommended regulatory tool, and practical implications of the legislative proposals.

II.

Management Consulting

Drawing from the extensive knowledge and experience of the Franczak Institute’s collaborators, from the very start we have offered management consulting services.
We help shape our clients’ future by providing them with an insight into the broadly-defined organizational environment, explaining any changes that take place and helping them predict any upcoming trends.
As management consultants, we support clients in planning and decision-making, organization design and management of human resources, and in controlling the aforesaid processes.
